Make circles with your wrists to further stretch and loosen these tired joints.

Shake Them Out

Launched in late 2010, Windows Phone 7 is the newest of the three major phone operating systems and has the advantage of being compatible with Microsoft’s other entertainment offerings: Zune and Xbox Live.

PC: The overwhelming dominator of the market, most computers in the U.S. market use a version of Microsof’s operating system, Windows. The Windows operating system, or OS, has gone through numerous versions over the years, each trying to improve upon the previous. The benefit to choosing a PC is mainly convenience: almost all software and peripherals are made and available for PC. You will not have a hard time finding replacement or upgrading products for the PC, and advanced users can often build their own PCs by buying just the components that they want for a completely personalized and tailored system. Computer gamers prefer PCs over Macs, as well.

Mac: One of the main benefits to using a Mac is its resistance to viruses. One rarely hears of a Mac infected with spyware or other malicious programs. Also, Mac computers are typically the preferred of those who work with media. The Adobe suite of products like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign were programmed with the Mac in mind, and will probably be most intuitive when used on that operating system. Another benefit of choosing a Mac is counter-intuitive; most high-end Macs are capable of having the Windows operating system installed on a separate partition, making it accessible for software that requires a PC. While this is not one of Apple’s major selling points, it can be useful for those who are having a hard time making the decision.

In the beginning of the Internet, there were only two: Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and AOL’s Netscape Navigator. Even though Microsoft’s bundling of its own browser with the Windows operating system was found in violation of antitrust laws, Explorer eventually became the standard in web browsers. That is not to say that it is the best browser, by any means. Most PC users simply were not aware that they had a choice. For that reason, users simply booted up the included Explorer program whenever they accessed the web.

Since then, several other browsers have been created for Internet access. Mozilla’s Firefox is an open-source browser, meaning it is free to download from their website. Firefox has many fewer security issues than Explorer and was among the first of the open source browsers. It also allows for the installation of add-ons and plug-ins, which can greatly enhance the functionality of the software. Users design these add-ons, which are also open-source, and most of them are highly stable.

Chrome is another open-source web browser, this one offered by the major player Google. Chrome is marketed as being the fastest browser available. It also is capable of running user-designed and coded add-ons and plug-ins for a more personalized experience. In addition, Chrome offers a toolkit for developers, Gears, which will eventually be phased out in favor of HTML5 coding. Chrome and Firefox both are far more secure than Microsoft’s Explorer, proving that popular does not equal best, especially not when it comes to computer software.

Another, smaller browser is the Opera program. Opera is faster than both Explorer and Firefox, but not quite as fast as Google’s Chrome. It is capable of running installed “widgets” for greater functionality, and also provides a customizable user experience. Opera fights viruses and malware with a system that helps to protect user passwords while on the Internet, making it one of the most secure browsers available.

FPS: The FPS, or first-person shooter, is one of the most popular types of video game available on the computer. These games typically have a military theme and involve tactical battle, either singly or as a team, against a group of opposing forces. The variety will come from the number and type of weapons and the environments where battles take place.
Platformer: The platformer is a style of game that is predominately found on gaming consoles. These games are typically designed for younger players and were originally 2-dimension in nature. Popular platform-style games include those featuring the characters Mario, Crash Bandicoot and Sonic the Hedgehog. The name “platformer” comes from the tendency of these games to feature strategic jumping and course navigation through various platforms scattered throughout the environment.

RPG: Also known as role-playing games, the most common element found in this genre is the act of “leveling up” through gaining experience. Players will often control a single customized character throughout a story while gaining better weapons, armor, and abilities. The origins of this type of game lie in “pen and paper” games like Dungeons and Dragons. Popular role-playing games on the computer include the Final Fantasy series.

RTS: RTS stands for “real-time strategy.” Games of this type usually involve controlling an army of forces in battle. Warcraft, The Sims, and Civilization are games of this genre in markedly different realms. Strategy, tactics and resource-management all play a big part of success in the typical RTS.

Email: Almost everyone is familiar with email by now, and many people have several different e-mail accounts. For instance, one might have an account associated with their position at work, another for personal correspondence and home, and even two or three more for specific purposes like shopping on the web or using message boards. Email is a great method for communicating with co-workers and employees because you can have a permanent record of what was said, when, and to whom.

Message Boards: Message boards are popular for specific groups or hobbyists. If you’ve been using PCs for very long, you have probably been exposed to several different versions of Windows, some better than others. HomeGroup: One of the cooler features to be included in Windows is the new HomeGroup, a way to simply file and printer sharing between computers on your home network. If you’ve ever tried to share files or a printer in Windows XP, you will definitely be excited about this new feature. No more emailing files between computers just so you can print!

Jump Lists: Do you have certain tasks or documents that you turn to each day on your computer? If so, using Jump Lists will save you time. Right-clicking on a program’s icon in the task bar will give you a list of items that you frequent within that program. If for any reason, the Jump List isn’t picking up a file you want, you can choose to manually select items that will appear.

Speed: A common joke in the computer industry is that every new version of Windows takes longer to boot or wake up. This is finally being addressed in Windows 7, where your computer is trained to sleep faster, wake up faster and recognize new peripherals via USB faster. Windows 7 will also use your existing memory more efficiently; if you upgraded your RAM for Windows Vista, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised at the speed now provided for that extra memory.

Entertainment: Windows 7 takes a huge leap toward “single point of entertainment” functionality. The ability to stream music, television shows and downloaded movies to another PC or even to a Windows-compatible television set is amazing. If you’re not a fan of paying for cable TV, you will be excited by this innovation.

That created what is now a thriving industry.  There are a multitude of websites which allow users to download free music ringtones as well as paying for them.  It used to be that the quality of the free downloads was not that great.  However, these days that is changing quite a bit.  In fact there are many websites where you can not only download music ringtones for free but you can also get free video downloads, free wallpaper and other goodies for your mobile device.   These days you do not have to be subjected to one-note monophonic noise but instead you can get Truetone ones which are music quality files like AAC or mp3 files.  You can, in fact, now even find what are called sing tones.  These are ring tones that are created karaoke style with you singing the words while the music plays.  You record it and you have a ringtone.

Microsoft Office is a suite of application software capable of handling just about any office-related task. There is a word processor, a spreadsheet application, a database manager and a presentation solution. Although MS Office is very popular and extremely robust, there are some downsides to it. One is the cost; a single license for Office is in the range of hundreds of dollars. Another problem with it is that the software and created documents are stored on the computer’s hard drive, making it inaccessible for those who travel or use more than one computer.

Luckily for us, there are several alternative to using MS Office. The first of these is the cloud solution by Google Docs. If you already have a Gmail account, you can use your login information for Google Docs. This online application allows you to create a document, a spreadsheet, or a presentation, each of which is compatible with MS Office’s file extensions. You can invite other Google users to share your files or workspace, and even allow editing by others.

Another great solution is Zoho. Zoho is also stored in the cloud, meaning that all information is online and accessible with a login and password. Zoho offers a full range of productivity solutions and the self-employed professional or small business will likely find everything they could possibly need, including tools for planning, recruiting, managing time, billing, invoicing, and collaboration. Some of the collaboration tools include chat, mail, wikis and project management.

If you are a die-hard fan of MS Office, you will probably want to investigate the free online solution openoffice. Now in version 3.1,  Open Office provides far more of the bells and whistles of MS Office than either Google Docs or Zoho, but it does not yet have the collaboration abilities of either. Regardless, the functionality provided here for word processing, spreadsheets and presentations does more than just duplicate MS Office; in many cases, it actually improves upon it.

Google is getting into everything lately. First the search engine, then email accounts, and now a browser and MS Office alternative. What’s next? How about their own operating system? If you’re not a professional in the computer industry, you may be surprised to learn that Windows is not the only operating system available for IBM-compatible PCs. Solaris and Ubuntu are two open source alternatives that are popular among the tech-savvy and both are reported to be widely superior to Windows.

Google’s operating system, also to be named “Chrome,” is to be released in late 2010. It will ship pre-installed on only certain products, and will not be available as an open source download. What is unique about Chrome is that it is to be web-based. Watching to see how Google will accomplish a web-based PC operating system will be quite interesting.

The web app giant has also reported that Chrome will be a completely different animal from its mobile operating system, Android. Chrome is planned to be a much more secure architecture, and resistant to viruses, trojans and other types of malware. It is currently planned that Chrome will also not require the constant security updates seen almost daily with Microsoft’s Windows OS, alleviating the need for frequent streaming updates.

The Chrome OS will probably be first featured on a “netbook” type of computer, a smaller sized laptop that is suited primarily for browsing the Internet and using web-based applications. It remains to be seen whether or not this OS, especially considering the high-function mobile OS Android, can be extended into the desktop PC and really give Windows a run for their money. Microsoft has held a virtual monopoly on the operating system market, not through superior product, but through superior marketing techniques. Google just might be the company to change all that.

One of the most exciting new innovations in video games is motion-sensitive technology. Using a motion detecting device connected to the gaming console, several games on many different platforms have become more interactive. The days of brain-dead, couch-potatoes gamers are waning, and new entries in this genre have fans of video games up and moving.

The first major company to incorporate motion technology into video games was Nintendo with the Wii console. The Wii uses a different type of controller, a motion-sensitive wand, to track the player’s movements and allow him or her to interact with the action on the screen. The Wii also works with a peripheral called a “Balance Board,” which gives even more interactivity to some games. Using these remotes and the motion-sensing technology, gamers can more accurately simulate activities like bowling, table-tennis, snow-boarding and exercising.
Playstation’s entry to the motion-sensing gaming field is the Playstation Move, a wand-like peripheral remote control with the sensing device on the end. While some games require the Move controller, others are merely enhanced with the additional action. Playstation Move games include a number of titles involving dancing, cheerleading and exercising, making it clear that system provides a much more physical experience than traditional video games.

The newest entry in the field, and arguably the best, is Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect. Called “Project Natal” while in development, the unique quality of Kinect is that the player himself is the controller; games for the Kinect do not require you to hold a peripheral in your hand. This whole-body motion-sensing provides for a much more immersing experience. Here again there are a number of titles dedicated to dance, sports, exercise and music.

The addition of motion-sensitive technology may very well eliminate the stereotype of overweight, sluggish, video-game playing children. It can also provide a wealth of new options in home exercising, meaning that people can simply dance a couple of pounds away in their own living rooms.

Ian Lucas, fellow Parliament member, questioned if self-regulation is the answer and stated that stronger action is needed.  He went on to talk about consulting with a wide range of entities, from ISPs and other businesses to the general public.  Lucas feels that this will help inform the public of just how much information they are retaining.

Supporters state that anyone can walk down the road and take a picture of a house.  But Halfon points out a difference in the commercial interest and scale between a person walking down the road and Street View. Instead of chasing bugs outside, the San Jose Mercury News reported that once Alex Miller heard that Mozilla was paying $3,000 to anyone that finds a bug in the browser, he was on the chase to find a computer bug.

In July 2010, Mozilla announced that their security bounty program reward has been increased from $500 to $3000. With this program, when a security-threatening bug is found in a Mozilla product and disclosed to the company privately, a $3000 reward will be paid and the researcher will retain control over the project details. Not only are industrial users qualified to receive a bounty, but users in the general public are also able to take part in the initiative. Hunters are encouraged to look at all Mozilla services, including Firefox, Firefox Mobil and Thunderbird. Mozilla Suite, which has long been dead, is not qualified. Mozilla reserves the right to disqualify a bug from the bounty payment.

When Alex Miller heard that Mozilla was increasing the $500 bounty to $3000, to researchers that appropriately disclose vulnerabilities within the Firefox browser, he was motivated to search for a bug himself. In an interview, the 12-year-old 7th grader stated that he had previously found an issue, but was not qualified for the payout. Alex then began spending approximately an hour and a half a day looking at code.

On about the tenth day, he noticed a flaw in the memory of the running program. This flaw can be manipulated to run arbitrary code on the computer, or ultimately crash it.  The issue was fixed in Firefox 3.6.11 and Firefox 3.5.14, and will soon be patched on Thunderbird 3.1.5 and 3.0.9.

On October 28th, 2010, the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference began with an announcement that an updated Internet Explorer 9 test version has been released this same day. The company stated that they are trying to make the Web resemble native applications. This new test version of Internet Explorer 9 is a platform for developers to use to test Web sites. The company reminds the audience that the update is not part of the full-feature beta version of IE 9 that was released early in the year.

Holding true to its word, Microsoft continues to update the test platform for Internet Explorer 9 for developers, even though the beta version was released. This platform preview can be used side-by-side with earlier versions of the Internet Explorer browser, which will help developers make additional changes and updates prior to releasing the final version of the popular browser. Microsoft also announced that there will not be a second beta version of Internet Explorer 9, but the company will release a near-final “release candidate” prior to the release of the final version of the long awaited Internet Explorer 9.

This year, the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference was formatted a bit different than how it was done in previous years. This year, there were fewer attendees at the conference itself, but the speakers were broadcasted on the Internet with 30,000 people watching online from local events taking place all over the world.

Along with the announcement of the Internet Explorer 9 test version update, Microsoft talked about some of its other products at the convention, such as the Kinect add-on for Xbox 360 and the figures of Windows 7 PC sales. The other big topic was the Windows 7 phone, which Microsoft feels is more personal and has more options than most other phones. Everyone at the conference received a Windows Phone 7. Microsoft encouraged those developers to write cool applications and programs for their phone.

When people though it is the quality of the camera which makes one better from the other, the resolution of the camera makes them think otherwise. Camera manufacturers have been beating one another at pixels and coming up with one innovation after other.
Fermilab has produced a camera that has a mind boggling resolution of 500 megapixels. More than enough pixels to make 50 high definition photos of you and your partner on your honeymoon. A single picture takes about 12GB of space to fit completely on a flash disk. But wait before you take your check book out or wait for that horse to win, on which you have bet money on sports betting sites. This camera is not for sale, it is only for research purposes, but you can look forward for something with a little less resolution. Seitz recently unveiled a camera with a resolution of 160 mega pixels. This has the best ISO that ranges from 500 to 10,000. It also has a shutter speed of nearly 1/20000 th of a second, that is on par with most of the digital cameras found in the market today. To save the images that are about 1GB in size, this thing needs an attached computer. This baby will cost you upwards of $40,000. If this is too much for you, you can go for the smaller brother which is just 64 MB and also Swiss made. It’s not just camera manufacturers who are fighting over megapixels. Even mobile manufacturers are going for the title of the highest megapixel camera. The average mega pixels of latest mobiles have gone up to 5 mega pixels. Currently Sony leads the pack with its 16 Megapixel phone.

When text messaging and social media first became popular the immediacy of the communication was lauded. It was a way to break down walls and bring people together. Teenager Anthony Stancl received a 15-year prison sentence for black mailing several of his peers into sexual relationships. Between spring of 2007 and fall of 2008, Stancl posed as a teenage girl named “Kayla” on Facebook. While posing as “Kayla”, Stancl requested and received explicit picture of at least seven New Berlin, Wisconsin area teenage boys.

Stancl then used the pictures to force the boys into sex acts. It was not the first time that Stancl has been in trouble with the law. As a 13-year-old, he was convicted of having in appropriate contact with a 3-year-old.

In Stancl’s case the use of social media appeals to be a case of a sexual predator using new means to attack victims. But is access to the Internet creating a new generation of sexual predators that would not have ever thought off exploiting someone sexually without using a computer or a cell phone as a filter?

There has been a rise in the crime that is now being referred to as “sextortion” in some court documents. The case involving Stancl is certainly an example, but generally the crime has been limited to blackmailing victims into sending explicit photos or video so that other damaging photos are not exposed to the family or friends of a victim.

This crime would not be possible in almost all of the cases without the access to technology. Many of the victims did not even know their blackmailer. The initial photos were simply distributed and tagged on a web site. The person committing the crime then used the internet to contact their victim usually through a social networking site such as Facebook or Myspace. The victims were strangers, who were only known online.

Why is gas almost $3.00 a gallon? Many pundits blame foreign oil and conflict in the Middle East.

Crude oil cost $21.77 per barrel in January 2001, compared to about $74 in Sept. 2010. Despite perception, the September 11, terrorist attacks had little to no effect on oil prices. Crude prices fell every month after the attack for the rest of 2001 year until hitting a low of $15.96 in December 2001. Price per barrel did not even approach currents levels until late summer 2005.

Although it has fluctuated, crude oil represents about 46 percent of the price of gasoline according to the reports from the Energy Information Administration. This figure comes close to matching the 47 percent of the cost of crude oil towards a gallon of gas in January 2001, when the national average for a gallon of gas was $1.29 per gallon. Other costs including marketing and oil company profits have risen at nearly equal levels with crude.

Even as the third largest petroleum producer in the world in 2005, the year oil prices spiked, foreign oil represented 59.8% of U.S. petroleum consumption according to the EIA. The nation remains dependent on gasoline and foreign oil. Despite increased costs oil consumption and demand are projected to rise. Increased foreign demand rather than price gouging or political strife has been the largest factor driving rising gas prices

Increased demand and a finite amount of petroleum left on the planet means inevitable change, even if the EIA estimates less than half of the world’s oil reserves will be exhausted by 2025. It will take technological advancements to solve the world’s energy habit.

As fossil fuels become impractical, new technologies are necessary to fuel transportation. One possible solution, Corn base ethanol has a number of problems of its own.

Ethanol or ethyl alcohol has been used as a fuel additive as far back as the 1920s when the Ford Model-T ruled American roadways. Extracting ethanol from corn requires fermenting the sugars in corn starch and then separating pure ethanol from water to ensure it is fuel grade. Ethanol burns cleaner than gas and as a renewable domestic energy source has been championed by corn growing associations, and the American auto industry as part of the solution to the rising price of crude oil.

Most ethanol production currently goes toward producing E10, a 90 percent gas/10 percent ethanol supply, but the auto industry has been pushing E-85. Already five million flex-fuel engine automobiles are on American roads.

By 2012, American manufacturers General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have committed to make at least half of new production flex fuel engines. According to EIA projections, by 2030 the ethanol production will reach 13.6 billion gallons annually. Twenty percent of the nation’s corn supply went toward making about 5.6 billion gallons of ethanol in 2006 and the number is growing. During the past three years, the amount of corn used for ethanol production has increased to 32 percent.

With corn in higher demand it has changed the way farmers do business. The value of the produce now justifies taking additional measures to ensure a high yield such as adding herbicides to corn.

The ethanol revolution could also bring back livestock. Turning corn into fuel also yields gluten feed for livestock.

Even if every kernel of the billions bushels produced annually went towards ethanol, it would replace less than a third foreign oil used in gasoline according to the National Ethanol Vehicles Association.

If the point of ethanol were to find an environmentally friendly alternative to oil. Than the draw backs of increased agricultural production and the limitations of corn ethanol as a fuel make this solution seem like an expensive temporary fix at best.

It seems almost absurd to look forward to the future, as it is one day closer to inevitable death. But how much do we owe the future? It is common practice for those in power to leave answering that question to fiction writers, philosophers, and free thinkers. In the era of instant gratification, politicians seem more slave to poll numbers than any vision of the future.

While political leaders might have the attention span of teenagers, some research scientists have taken it upon themselves to take a more serious look into sustainability of different aspects of human existence. Would these efforts have taken place without men like Arthur Clark showing us a realistic, yet fiction vision of man going into space? Unfortunately, as Werner Heisenberg might agree, it is uncertain the exact extent which these works have impacted scientific pursuit. While the impact of the musings of science fiction writers can be debated, the visions fall into a very simple multiple choice: fix this or face a hellish future. In The Road by Cormac McCarthy, man has squandered resources and given into our adolescent desires to consume and not look ahead.

In Star Trek, mankind has discovered that for the individual to thrive it will require self-sacrifice towards a greater good and uniting people despite economic and philosophical differences. While it seems almost absurd to say that though Star Trek man can find the philosophy to achieve a better future, it is difficult to predict how stories and traditions can influence mankind. After all, who could have predicted how a story of a virgin giving birth would and continues to shape the direction of human activity? Beyond entertainment, science fiction can serve as a warning to the perils of ignoring the future and a starting point for discussing it.

Most great inventions came from a simple conversation or the drawings of a dreamer. Future technologies will be things that were once thought to be pure folly. After all 100 years ago who would have believed a machine hooked up to a network would have access to nearly all human knowledge?

Science fiction continues to be a pioneer for technological advancement if only for bringing the concepts into the public’s eye. Of science existed in a vacuum where public opinion and public funding did not matter than perhaps science fiction would not be as important as the means for generating discussion.

For example, the film Gattaca was successful in bringing the concept of genetic engineering into the mainstream, and its possibilities are being tested now. The ethical red lights flashed right from the origins of the concept. What do you do as a senator who has to vote on the legality of a family altering their unborn child’s genes to eradicate a cancer gene that runs in the family?

While this line of questioning leads to an endless debate on human genome ethics questions, science fiction has also pushed forward the possibilities of how man is supposed to take on the challenges of different unexplored frontiers. Great minds like Jules Verne thought up future inventions for space, land, and sea travel years before they were invented.

Perhaps he most famous modern example is Star Trek series. The basic premise of the series relies on the fact that mankind has made space travel and warp speed possible and has made first contact with alien races. Man has been forced to work together as a single entity (Planet Earth) and has joined a United Federations of Planets which is a United Nations of the planets. It would be silly if each individual nation each tried to deal with each alien planet. The Star Trek world works because man gained certain legitimacy as an unified human race. Technology may unite mad as never before.

The idea of mankind unified for a common cause has been a common theme in popular science fiction for decades, but the idea has been thought to be practical until the invention of the Internet. With universal access to cheap communication some of the barriers that have created nations and conflict might begin to come down. Like most ideas this started simply as a way to entertain and to dream.

A drought in India wipes out a food shipment meant for Ireland. Warfare in Africa causes diamond prices to rise in the United States. Perhaps the biggest unintended consequence of technological advance is that nearly everyone’s life is intertwined in a global economy, which means that the idea of separate nation states has become outdated.

Technology and the energy necessary to fuel it have causes problems that any single nation faces or can handle alone, and problems that can only be meet by mankind as a whole. With the future of governing in mind, science fiction continually reminds us that this will be a common theme whether the nations of the world are ready or not.

Our nations face multinational problems today such as global warming, the world economic recession, population growth and the general scarcity of resources. As time goes by populations will continue to rise and technology will continue to advance. Man must ease off of regressive ideas such as isolationism, nationalism, and to an extent religion, and begin to view problems with a broader view.

How are governments supposed to govern an increasingly technological society with multinational problems? So-called civilized society has dealt with crises in the past; with results as fragmented as the cooperation.

One of the first well documented multi-nation crises was the bubonic plague from the 13-17th centuries which devastated Europe. Each nation-state tried to deal with the problem individually and about of Europe’s population died. It was eventually determined that the plague was a result of poor sanitary conditions, but Thomas Malthus claimed it was due to his Malthusian Limit.

The Malthusian Limit is a theory that mankind’s population had exceeded the supply of resources and the plague was a result of this and was simply bringing the number of people back to sustainable levels. The world population has far exceeded that of Malthus’ time. And it continues to grow. Man’s technological sophistication has grown to the level that man has the power to destroy himself. It remains to be seem if man is mature enough to control the power he created.

As General Robert E. Lee prepared to surrender in the house of Wilmer McLean on April 9, 1865, historians can only speculate upon his thoughts. Relief that the death and suffering had concluded, disappointment that his cause had lost, but one must also think that guilt added a few grey hairs to his beard. Aesthetics had replaced ethics in the minds of southerners and the dogma of the Lost Cause in popular culture continues to influence historical debate on the reason for the failure of the Confederacy.

Certainly the North enjoyed vast advantages in terms of population and industrial base, but the disorganized and seemingly self defeating goals of the southern states ensured that even with a military victory the Confederacy might lose the peace. There are more than 21 million hits for the phrase, “the South will Rise Again” on Google, the vulgarity of nostalgia for a cause that collapsed under the strain of its own problems as much as the boots of the Union soldiers.

The Confederacy faced extraordinary disadvantages in 1861. The population of the North : The South. The GDP of the North. The South. The South also lacked a navy, a civil service, and a central government. It was the equivalent of a second American Revolution. Except the there was no ocean to separate the opponents in this conflict. It appeared to be the equivalent of a silver bullet of the South having to fight a perfect war, but the resources do not tell the entire story of the southern defeat.

If the outcome of war could be determined by decided edges in technology or resources than the United States would have had no problem imposing their will in either Vietnam or Iraq. The South could fight as defenders. Thus southern defeat should not be considered a triumph of technology, otherwise American interests would have won out in Vietnam or Iraq. Technology did not dictate Southern defeat as much a poor organization and a cause divided. The Confederacy perished by its own hand long ago.

Technology has made the planet a smaller place in good ways such as allowing global communication available at the click of a mouse and allowing for longer life spans; and in bad ways such as globalizing problems like population growth and increasing the scarcity of natural resources. Nations need to understand how their problems have evolved with technology into humanity’s problems that no single nation can solve.

Boutros Boutros-Ghali, former secretary general of the U.N. once said “Only stupid people don’t change their minds.” The nations of this planet need to start taking steps towards strengthening the global community by putting to rest overly nationalistic sentiment and policy of isolationism. Humanity’s growth in the future depends on it.

While much has been made of the power of the Internet in uniting mankind, how successful has the Internet been in breaking down age old barriers? One of the most common motifs in literature to explore the topic of how far man is divided by prejudice is alien invasion.

What if aliens landed on earth in the middle of Washington D.C. tomorrow and communicated with us a mission of peace and cooperation with mankind. How would Washington and the rest of the world react to that? It is almost certain the current U.N. would not be prepared for this. Utter madness would ensue, but to be fair that is an attribute that is often associated with revolutionary change. We would only have one shot to deal with these aliens and not screw it up. Seeing as they found us, they are most likely the more advanced race, so we would not want to upset them.

Assuming that man make a bad first impressing with the aliens and have established friendly relations, what would be the next step? Would the U.S., China, or the European Union try to set up exclusive communication rights with them? How about corporations? Would they try and take advantage of the situation and use it as a profit making tool?

Technology might have changed the way man does business, but it has yet to alter man’s motivations.

The free open exchange of information on the Internet has provided a marketplace for nearly every type of item a person could imagine. So there is no real surprise that the so-called “world’s oldest profession” would find a healthy market for its services on a forum as impersonal as the Internet.

Sex based crimes have been growing in frequency as predators find new ways to exploit victims online. The term “sextortion” was recently cited in court documents. While sextortion has been used to get victims to provide explicit photos or video of themselves to prevent the release of other pictures, the blackmailing has also gone as far a people being forced into prostitution.

Prostitution is difficult to police because the act is often an exchange of money for services by two consenting adults. If each party is pleased by the transaction there is no reason for the police to become involved. While this sort of prostitution might be largely ignored by police departments the access to new streams of revenue through the Internet has made wholesale prostitution a profitable endeavor. The victims in this crime are often held against their will, beaten, drugged or otherwise coerced. And a growing number of victims are not consenting adults.

In August 2010, 17 state attorneys general sent a co-authored letter to the online classified site Craigslist. The letter demanded it remove its adult services section. Craigslist complied by putting a censored block were the adult services listing used to be.

While groups applauded the move by Craigslist, there were concerns that violators could still access Craigslist sex ads by going to foreign versions of the site. Washington D.C.-based anti-child trafficking organizations have asked Craigslist to ban the adult services section on foreign sites as well.

Perhaps limiting the ads will have a positive effect on limiting child trafficking, but as with other forms of prohibiting a vice, if there is a demand and a way to profit people will find a way to bring the product to the customers. The Craigslist ban just might make the sex trade crawl back into the shadows.

Craig Newmark created Craigslist, first as an e-mail list in 1995. His list was a moderate success, so in 1996 he expanded to create an online presence. Newmark started small and simple. His design was about as basic as websites went even for 1996. There were no major images, no graphics and the programming stuck with basic HTML language. Newmark simply stuck with a design that had been successful for decades, the newspaper classified ads, and turned it into an electronic format.

Newmark’s list first featured only his hometown of San Francisco, but he soon expanded Craigslist to include major cites across the country including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Newmark charged a small fee for posting jobs in the major markets, but for the most part Craigslist has remained free.

It now covers every community in the nation in some form and many across the world. But Craigslist has been an outlier compared to other Internet sites. There are no banner ads. The rates have not risen greatly. And the site still only charges in major markets. While the rates have not risen Craigslist’s exposure has. The site has billions of page views every month. It is one of the top ten most visited sites in the United States, and its popularity has risen around the world.

Craigslist brings in millions of dollars from the limited advertising that it does sell, but the company has done little to maximize its profits or change its appearance. Although Newmark has commented that he created the site to help people find things like cars or apartment, and he has stuck to his word by keeping the site cheap there are still detractors.

Craigslist has earned the ire of the newspaper industry due to its success. Newspapers once enjoyed a monopoly on classified ads, which ensured their profitability year after year. Craigslist has become the most widely viewed classified in the world and has effectively ruined the paid classified market.
Law enforcement has also criticized Craigslist for allowing a marketplace for illegal trade. Craigslist never promised perfection though, only access.
